From the page: Nearly every household on Earth has a fridge that totally wastes at least 1 kWh of energy a day (365 kWh a year). How much reduction in greenhouse emissions can we achieve by banning just ONE inefficient household device in just ONE country? How many politicians debating for how many years will it take to achieve such a ban?

I seriously don't understand why there are not inexpensive refrigerators like this conversion. This is a stunningly simple concept, and if it saves as much energy as the article says, where it only uses in 24 hours as much as a 100w bulb does in 1 hour, then this is THE way to go for off-grid refrigeration.

"Using vertical doors in refrigeration devices is an act against the Nature of Cold Air. Understanding and cooperating with Nature rather than acting against it leads to much better efficiency." All you do -- and this fellow offers the how-to -- is change the thermostat so the freezer only cools to, say, 4 degrees celcius (just above freezing). Reduces the cost of running the fridge by a factor of ten. Our existing Fisher and Pykel chest freezer would fit perfectly into the current upright fridge real estate. Final word from the author, who contributes to the Australian Appropriate Technology magazine, "Renew": "My chest fridge consumes as much energy in 24 hours as a 100W light bulb does in just an hour. Not only it is energy efficient. I have never seen a fridge that was SO quiet."
