danbaltzell...yea they usually do beat them, that's why when i went to thailand i really didn't want to ride the elephants cuz i knew they were beaten and starved to be trained....but my mom made me ride them because it was a once in a life time chance, i did feed it alot of bananas and sugar canes though!

Very cool. Although I assume the elephant is just going through the motions. ie: trained to replicate some brush strokes and movements.
