IN COMMON ACRES
Carving lines in the soil
of each other's field
through decades of parallel crops
uncertain weather
and cross pollination
of crosshatched aerial views
planting our feet
in common acres
taking root
through the black loam and clay
behind our fingernails
with each day a new plot to plow
for the lottery of a harvest
somewhere in the abstract of time
and all this suffering and toil
for a chance to win
an undetermined prize
behind door number three
and all the voices sing
we come and go and no one knows
we come and go and hope it shows
through the eyes
and footprints
of our children
