I'm just reading a book by this guy, Michael Pollan, called A Place Of My Own. Ostensibly a story about a guy building his own place, a shed, a study, an escape, but actually more of an updated Thoreau. Explorations into Architecture, Philosophy and the whole concept of space and how we relate to it. Not to mention the bits on word-working. (He! That was a Freudian slip - I meant wood-working, of course, but in fact, this is a book for writers, by a writer, and thus word-working is quite an apt slip of the keys! :o) Highly recommended to writers, thinkers and shed-builders.

Very few writers have effected my way of thinking the way Pollan's work has, especially "Omnivore's Dilemma" and "In Defense of Food". He never seems to be trying to sell you on an idea - he just presents you with clear and well-researched information to do with what you will - but you can't help but be changed. If you haven't read his stuff you need to.

I expect that Michael Pollan may write something about the effect diverting corn to fuel will have. His book A Place of My Own sounds useful. From the page: "the author of the book The Omnivore's Dilemma: A Natural History of Four Meals, named one of the ten best books of 2006 by the New York Times, as well as three previous books: The Botany of Desire, Second Nature, and A Place of My Own, pictured here. Pollan is a contributing writer to the New York Times Magazine and the Knight Professor of Journalism at UC Berkeley."

After reading The Omnivore's Dilemma, I think Michael Pollan is my hero.
