A cuecat is a barcode scanner that looks like a cat. To function properly they require special modification.
There is a detailed controversey as to why they were distributed in their default condition. To learn more about the controversy click on one of the news links to the left. This modification will eliminate the controversial functionality of the CueCat by eliminating the embedded serial number stored in an EEPROM chip located inside the CueCat itself. It will also decrypt the garbled output of the scanner to standard human-readable text.
After the modification the scanner will function as a standard PS/2 keyboard wedge. This means it no longer needs special software or drivers to function, and it will work on ALL operating systems including DOS, Windows, Linux, Unix, etc. The prices for PS/2 barcode wands start at $120 and go up from there. So it is well worth it to modify your cuecat or have your cuecat modified. "
