Endeavor is ready to launch to rescue the crew of Atlantis in the event that Atlantis is damaged by debris while servicing the Hubble Space Telescope. This picture makes me kind of sad; when I was growing up, the shuttle was supposed to revolutionize space flight, making it almost a non-event. While the shuttle program certainly brought a lot of benefits to the space program, technical snags, reductions in funding, and overly-cautious management at NASA slowed the growth of the program, preventing it from reaching its full potential. At one time, nothing would have made me happier than to see a whole field of these magnificent machines ready to expand man's presence in space. This photo, showing two of the last remaining shuttles (which are scheduled to be taken out of service and placed in museums within the next couple of years) makes me sad for what could have been. Sure, they're developing the Constellation vehicles as a "replacement", but that takes us back to totally disposable spacecraft, ala the Apollo days. It seems like such a waste...
