I think it's telling that they cited homeland security as a reason why piles of trash shouldn't be photographed. Perhaps the real threat is that people will start consuming more mindfully

Great stuff, but why do these kinds of things always have to specify "America"? It's not like Europeans and Canadians are much different. This is a human problem above all. The British don't recycle at all - they ship all of their recycling to China where it is disposed of in the worst ways possible.

But then we don't know how many of these items were headed for recycling.

Bah, just propaganda here. These are cropped in pictures of junk piles. Yes, there are big piles of junk out there that we bury in the ground because we don't want the stuff any more. Guess what!? These garbage dumps will be a big resource for raw materials in the future. Besides, many of the piles in these photos are piles of things that are going for recycling anyways. For instance, all of those spent ammunition shells are brass! Do you know how much that stuff is worth? The reason that you had to trespass to take those photos is because the property owners are afraid that people are going to steal that waste. Quit tooting your horn over non-issues. Go find something this is truly disturbing and take photos of that.
