moreminimal discovered 13 months ago- There's nothing particularly eco-friendly about leather: livestock farming makes a mess of the environment, and there are plenty of ethical reasons to refrain from animal products. Want some cruelty-free alternatives? Start here.

Heggs rated 13 months ago- There are some good points about why leather goods are hard on the environment. I particularly like how the author mentions that using PVC is even worse. However, I wouldn't say that "cruelty-free" clothing is necessarily the best for the environment. For example, cotton crops account for one quarter of global insecticide use and one tenth of global pesticide use. A non-organic t-shirt needs a quarter pound of chemicals to be produced, meaning polluted water and increased petroleum use. If you really want to make environmentally friendly purchases, buy products that will last for several years, rather than months, meaning less consumption overall. A well-made pair of leather shoes is better than cheaply-made canvas. Better yet, hit up a thrift store.
