From the page: "Once upon a time, as the story goes, deer were the sacred messengers of gods of the Kasuga shrine which is located here in Nara. The descendants of these deer live in the Nara Park and occasionally wander around the city streets. Because they are sacred, they are protected by law."

I've been there - it was one of my most vivid memories of Japan. Those deer really are very pushy. I recall us tying a few of those crackers to one of my friends' belts and watching him run around the park wondering why there was a horde of deer chasing him. Heheheh.
