This might seem like just another cool new product. But LED's use 50-80% less energy than standard incandescent lights and last 10x longer. And they have a lot less mercury and other toxic materials in them.If all lights in the world were switched to LED's, the reductions in energy consumption and green house gasses would significant. Two factors have been holding back widespread adoption of LED's: cost and the quality of light (the early LED's produced a very harsh, unflattering light). But the quality issue has been addressed. As for cost, if Pres. Obama mandated that all Federal buildings switch to LED's within 3 years and banned the use of incandescents within 5 years, the costs would plummet.
