Steiner62 discovered 3 months ago- OK, I'm excited. I can't believe I am the first Stumbler to stumble upon this ABSOLUTE GEM from 1972. Maybe I'm just showing my age & none of you young folk care. If you are a Peter Gabriel admirer & are too young to realise just how wonderful he was with Genesis, enjoy. If you are an old fogey Genesis (when Gabriel was their lead vocalist) fan like me, I predict you'll be in raptures after watching this clip if you haven't seen it before. I've seen stills of this vintage performance only before, guessing from their poor quality that it was indeed from an old TV appearance, long wiped, & lost ton posterity forever. For me & those a bit older than me though, this is like finding a musical Holy Grail. Genesis with Gabriel at their peak & in all their youthful glory belting out a fantastic performance of "The Musical Box" live, with remastered sound. AND it's available on mail order as part of a two 3 hour double DVD. I've dreamt about finding something like this since I was a teenager. So even if this remains the sole review, I don't care, because "I've been waiting here for so long"... So now go & heck out this incredible TV studio recording from one of my favourite bands. ''The Musical Box'' became a highlight of the group's live shows, presenting Gabriel's extraordinary abilities as a singer/actor as well as hinting at a level of lyrical sophistication that dazzled many fans and onlookers. And the playing from the other members is just great. This song has it all! And the video even has some stunning graphical effects (not): the image from the Nursery Cryme album... Recorded 20. or 21. Mar 1972 Pop Shop Programme, Belgium Pro Shot Running time: 9m35s Lineup: Peter Gabriel Phil Collins Tony Banks Steve Hackett Mike Rutherford The Musical Box (From the Genesis LP "Nursey Cryme" 1971) Lyrics to The Musical Box - Play me old king cole That I may join with you, All your hearts now seem so far from me It hardly seems to matter now. And the nurse will tell you lies Of a kingdom beyond the skies. But I am lost within this half-world, It hardly seems to matter now. Play me my song. Here it comes again. Play me my song. Here it comes again. Just a little bit, Just a little bit more time, Time left to live out my life. Play me my song. Here it comes again. Play me my song. Here it comes again. Old king cole was a merry old soul, And a merry old soul was he. So he called for his pipe, And he called for his bowl, And he called for his fiddlers three. But the clock, tick-tock, On the mantlepiece - And I want, and I feel, and I know, and I touch, Her warmth... Shes a lady, shes got time, Brush back your hair, and let me get to know your face. Shes a lady, she is mine. Brush back your hair, and let me get to know your flesh. Ive been waiting here for so long And all this time has passed me by It doesnt seem to matter now You stand there with your fixed expression Casting doubt on all I have to say. Why dont you touch me, touch me, Why dont you touch me, touch me, Touch me now, now, now, now, now.. With thanks to Tommygun1028 for remastering the sound to perfection & uploading it to YouTube (along with many other wonderful Genesis/Gabriel era clips!) :)
