  • Why Use Linux? | PCMech

I do love Linux, but it still doesn't support my soundcard, even though ALSA claims it does. If I could use my MIDI port, I'd have one less reason to stick with XP. I just upgraded to Ubuntu Hardy Heron, and it's a bit flaky at the moment. It hard locks and I can't shut it... more

sorry linux haters, your arguments are not valid. perhaps if you can't be bothered to use that internet thingee and do some research or sit down and use your brain chances are you shouldn't be playing around online anyhow

Two words: Wireless support. Linux seriously lacks it. I've used four different wireless adapters, and I haven't been able to find support for any of them at all. Nothing has worked, and I spent hours. Linux is good. At certain things. In certain circumstances. Nothing is good at everything in its relative field; get over it.

Not very accurate. Driver support on Linux is lacking, and what's with the Windows cliches of blue screens and spyware? I can't remember the last time my Windows based pc did blue screen, it's even more unlikely when you're just typing out a document anyway... Plus I haven't had any spyware for years. It has some valid points but turns out to be one of those generic 'Linux is better' articles

I really wish the Ubuntu guys didn't bundle Hardy with the beta of Firefox 3, because it crashes all the time, and it has problems with Flash.

God, enough already. If Linux could actually run any of the programs I actually use a computer for, I'd switch in a second. Sorry everyone, there may be a dandy open source project out there that might be professionally viable in 3-5 years, but unfortunately, I need a computer that can open this filetype TODAY, and despite what everyone claims, WINE is not perfect, and you still have to fuck with it to an agonizing degree to get it to actually do anything. Which is a shame, because Linux is probably one of the best OSes I've ever run, but the Linux-faithful seem to forget that you don't run a computer to run the OS, you run the OS to run OTHER PIECES OF SOFTWARE. If the OS can't run the software, why run the OS?

Because Linux isn't always better. It has it's uses.

"Many Linux distributions are as easy, if not easier to install as Windows." Yea well, loads of people don't install the OS on their own. ""Linux is too complicated to use" In what way?" Oh gee I dno, IT'S DIFFERENT, and when a cellphone can scare a mom away, what will a commandline do?
