A personal MBA is not a certification; it is also not an impersonal business education masquerading as a management education. It's also much, much cheaper than paying a school.

"Business schools don't have a monopoly on worldly wisdom. If you're serious about learning advanced business principles, the Personal MBA can help. The Personal MBA recommended reading list is the tangible result of hundreds of hours of reading and research, and features only the very best books the business press has to offer. So skip the fancy diploma and $150,000 loan - you can get a world-class business education simply by reading these books."

The Personal MBA Manifesto: Mastering Business Through Self-Education

The Personal MBA purports to be a replacement for an education at a Business School. It's not. But it is a good study program for people interested in business but who don't have the time or wherewithal to spend $50,000 on an education while taking time off from the workforce. The problem with an autodidact comparing what he learned with what would be picked up in a traditional classroom is that he has no idea what was discussed in the traditional classroom. The best professors are able to greatly expand their students' learning in a way no textbook ever could. And let's face it - most textbooks are boring reads. However a bad professor (and there are plenty of these) can diminish just as much as compared to a self-study program. And in terms of quoting from Good Will Hunting - remember the character making the quote is a one-in-a-million genius savant. And also remember the reply he got - without the diploma, he'll be serving fries to the diploma guy's kids while they're on their way to a ski trip in Vermont.
