- This is an Ink Stone.You usually grind what is called an ink stick on to it with water. Grind it to your desired level of grey or blackness,or even have various levels on the same ink stone.Then you can use one brush to paint the other brush with varying levels as in shading.actually, I was recording this picture for the purposes of having a digital sample to order some more of the same for somebody that uses the ink stones for carving.
