How much is your time worth? FYI: Gamers/old dogs need not apply. Driving a car is not akin to riding a bike, and you'd have to learn new things if you want to do more than sit in the passenger seat. Believe me, breaking the windows habits are hard - a true power user reaps the benefits, however. Linux may not have the commercial support Windows does for now - come to think of it, Linux doesn't have the commercial problems, either.

I run Ubtuntu right now, installed just a few days ago, and I'm already sick of it. I'm sure it would be perfect for the tasks mentioned in the article, but I have lots of other things to accomplish on my system. Even Wine didn't help it.

Don't get me wrong, I love Ubuntu... But the notion that you can just install it and it magically does everything you could ever want it to right off of the install disc is just plain false. I bought a new Vista computer and immediately dual booted it with Ubuntu, and I've spent WAY more time messing with Ubuntu than I I have Vista. That's fine for me because I like figuring out what's wrong and why things aren't working and getting them back up, but for an old person, it would be less than desirable in reality.

I'm an Ubuntu user for a two an a half years now, and I have to admit that this article simply sucks... it's not even lobbing for Ubuntu! Generally it's a bad way to advertise Linux distributions... yes, you will feel pain if you have dial-up win modem, but... hey... DSL can work quite well on Win platforms, right?! When it is to do with depression caused by default brown theme on Ubuntu... it may be primarily inducted by Windows usage, and default blue Luna theme, but symptoms only manifest after you switch to default Ubuntu (brown) theme... after all, orange and blue are on opposite sides on colour ring... But if your depressive episodes continue, you should consider a N2O inhalation... it'll bring a smile on your face again... literary!!!

Don't kid yourself, Windows XP can handle email, word, light internet browsing and solitaire. It's a somewhat awful operating system but she's not dealing with Windows ME here. Also, what EnosShenk said. Nevertheless, it still stands that Ubuntu can also accomplish those tasks successfully, albeit induce depression from the goddamn default brown theme.

From the page: "Properly setup and customized for an individual's computing needs, Ubuntu Linux can be used successfully and easily by anyone of any age and computing ability." I like Ubuntu, but extrapolating "single elderly woman with limited computer literacy" to "anyone of any age and computing ability" is simply wrong.

Hahah, so, if I am dumb enough to use Norton AV, then I should DEFINITELY use Ubuntu, right? Hell, after watching it struggle with my dual monitor setup and ATI's crippled drivers, I had to shoot the poor thing. In the head. Oh, wait, *fridge logic*, she had dialup related problems with Windows, and DID NOT want to get DSL, but then the GOT DSL for Ubuntu? WTF???! Wait, wait, she also uses hotmail. DAMN, these people have no idea, do they?MORAL OF THE STORY:Problems associated with dial-up disappear when you get DSL. The end.
