My StumbleUpon Opinion, I think it's a blessing :)

I can't argue with stumbleupon's greatness. However the free-will argument doesn't really cut it against the addiction argument. I'd suggest stumbling through some neuroscience and addiction pages or reading some of the literature. What you'll find is as addiction grows, free will is almost completely marginalized.

Additionally if you want to talk about classical conditioning, we are all literally PRESSING A BUTTON and receiving (as you said) 1 out of 3 times a very positive experience or reward.

I think I can stop when I want to, but I also know that I am deluding myself into thinking that because I like the idea of free-will. I am addicted to this and I will come back if I try to quit. I don't really have a problem with this addiction, because instead of giving me cancer or making me fall out of society, the side effects are community, and intellectual growth and interaction.

comment in support of the stumbleupon addictive habit-forming tendency. Thanks for the great description. How true! From the page: "to me StumbleUpon is like the small restaurant on the corner which can be found in every city. It looks like nothing special, one restaurant out of the thousands, but you go in and have one of the best meals of your life. StumbleUpon brings these pages closer to you, and it let's you have a great time. If you can't stop that just means SU is a great service, the fault lies with you."
