Sony's got themselves in deep on this one. A couple weeks ago, articles started popping up about a small bit of Sony's DRM package that was intentionally hidden deep within Windows' twisty bowels. Then, it was found that this hidden code was essentially a gigantic rootkit (ie, badhearts could make malicious use of vulnerabilities in the code to do naughty things). Sony really screwed the pooch and failed to heed warnings from the tech community. The result? Virus scanners were wired to remove Sony's DRM rootkit before Sony released a removal tool of their own that worked. Now, the icing. Thanks to a curious soul, there's an ongoing investigation into the possibility that Sony intentionally plagarized Open Source code for capital gain and tried to keep it out of the public eye by shoving it into this bit of hidden code. Particularly, some of DVD Jon's code from VLC is being used. Anyway, this will be an interesting case to follow. An infringement lawsuit of this magnitude leveled against Sony (or F4I) could really bring the giant to its knees.
