DeepSkyFrontier rated 10 months ago- I hate diamonds. Here's some perspective. Once upon a time- back when aluminum was worth more than gold- pearls were worth far, far more than diamonds. Diamonds were one of the most common gemstones (they still are) and were priced accordingly. Since the advent of pearl culturing techniques, the price of pearls has descended into the range of the semi-precious. Diamonds- especially with so many aesthetically pleasing alternatives- should do the same thing. Except for two things: hundreds of millions of dollars being spent on advertising- people do what they're told. Tell people to buy a diamond to prove they love someone, and they'll do it *just in case.* The other thing: artificial scarcity. Really large gems are really rare, but average-sized ones are too numerous to count. People get confused about how the concept of scarcity actually applies to diamonds, and no one corrects them. I look forward to the day when diamonds will be considered as disposable as aluminum cans.
