Creative did eventually back down--but they should still write Dan a check for all the crap they put him through. arleas (post below me) has it right: they are quickly becoming irrelevant, with the EAX standard dying and better integrated HD sound from Realtek.

The real reason why Creative is going under is because integrated sound cards are approaching the quality of the low end cards they sell. If people aren't hardcore into music and sound they won't pony up $140 for a good sound card when the one that came with their motherboard does just fine.

So knowing that the audiophiles are the only ones who are willing to pay extra for quality they can probably barely hear, they do everything they can to ensure they'll have to buy NEW sound cards rather than keep their old ones.

Along comes a guy who proves that they're a bunch of greedy corporate assholes trying to sell cards for Vista when the old cards work fine (with proper drivers). Now they're trying to sue him for "Stealing our goods". Yes, by providing software creative should have provided all along, he's robbing you blind. Right...

Anyway, this is the original forum thread about Daniel_K and his vista drivers that provided the functionality that the XP drivers had in them.

Well lookit that - they went and edited the first post to try and not look like such greedy assholes.

Typical corporate yada and bullshit. No wonder Creative is selling their headquarters and most likely going belly up!

Stealing? What is he stealing? Functional drivers??! Haa... thumbs up for this daniel_k guy, thumbs down for Creative.

if Creative didn't suck at writing drivers, this wouldn't have happened!!!

wow, what a PR blunder. this wasn't/isn't about stealing as some of the thumbs down seem to be suggesting is the case; its that creative crippled their soundcard in order to push customers to buy newer hardware. You are more that welcome to argue that this is "just business", but this is heinous for any person remotely interested in their products working efficiently and properly. Daniel_k wasn't making money directly from the product, but receiving donations for his time spent. I used to love creative but, as any current owner knows, the software and compatibility issues have been unresolved for so long. I stuck by Creative because I really did believe that their product was exceptional and that the development team cared about the products they were releasing. I wrote off bugs and issues with the faith that they would be resolved BY CREATIVE. A customer, regardless of process, fixed the problems and then shared that solution... a solution that actually brings profit to the company because it still maintains a logical demand for the product. Instead of embracing this, the company removed the solution. Yes eventually the package was re-released, which should dissuade naysayers claiming that creative was right when they themselves have reversed their actions in a paltry attempt to satisfy the community. The outrage was and is completely justified. It should be a permanent reminder on how businesses need to always consider the needs/demands of the customers. Within this digital age, a lack of flexibility and adaptation is simply crippling and stupid.

From the page: "Daniel_K: We are aware that you have been assisting owners of our Creative sound cards for some time now, by providing unofficial driver packages for Vista that deliver more of the original functionality that was found in the equivalent XP packages for those sound cards. In principle we don t have a problem with you helping users in this way, so long as they understand that any driver packages you supply are not supported by Creative. Where we do have a problem is when technology and IP owned by Creative or other companies that Creative has licensed from, are made to run on other products for which they are not intended. We took action to remove your thread because, like you, Creative and its technology partners think it is only fair to be compensated for goods and services. The difference in this case is that we own the rights to the materials that you are distributing. By enabling our technology and IP to run on sound cards for which it was not originally offered or intended, you are in effect, stealing our goods. When you solicit donations for providing packages like this, you are profiting from something that you do not own. If we choose to develop and provide host-based processing features with certain sound cards and not others, that is a business decision that only we have the right to make. Although you say you have discontinued your practice of distributing unauthorized software packages for Creative sound cards we have seen evidence of them elsewhere along with donation requests from you. We also note in a recent post of yours on these forums, that you appear to be contemplating the release of further packages. To be clear, we are asking you to respect our legal rights in this matter and cease all further unauthorized distribution of our technology and IP. In addition we request that you observe our forum rules and respect our right to enforce those rules. If you are in any doubt as to what we would consider unacceptable then please request clarification through one of our forum moderators before posting. Phil O Shaughnessy VP Corporate Communications Creative Labs Inc." What a load of crap, eh? Wanted to make sure the link to the creative forums with this posting from the "VP Corporate Communications, Creatve Labs, Inc." was here. This is the most anti-customer type of thing I have ever heard. I guess to a certain extent we can thank Microsoft's Vista Certification program and the Entertainment cartels for this type of crap as well. You don't see nVidia and some other customer-friendly driver/hardware companies pulling this crap, do you?

Their X-Fi series of cards run crappy, and their software is buggy. It also took them forever to create Linux drivers for their X-Fi cards. Unfortunately, these drivers were only released for 64 bit versions of Linux. In addition, their Vista drivers also don't work very well.
