Distributed computing has the potential to really help science. I do Rosetta@home myself, but Folding@home is a good one too.

From the page: Folding@home is a distributed computing project -- people from throughout the world download and run software to band together to make one of the largest supercomputers in the world. Every computer takes the project closer to our goals. Folding@home uses novel computational methods coupled to distributed computing, to simulate problems millions of times more challenging than previously achieved. With the extra memory your computer isn't using, this program helps find cures for: Alzheimer's Disease Cancer Huntington's Disease Osteogenesis Imperfecta Parkinson's Disease Ribosome antibiotics Your participation can help lead to a cure for these diseases.

One of the most ambitious scientific projects in history.

This is a worthy cause for anyone with a computer. By downloading some software and running it in the background during your computer's idle cycles, you are able to contribute to the understanding of protein folding, misfolding. The results of your processing are sent to the folding@home team at Stanford. The goal is to enable better understanding of diseases such as Huntingdon's, Parkinsons and many others. Team DynasUK is 98571.
