When multiple people edit the same document simultaneously, any changes are instantly reflected on everyone's screen. The result is a new and productive way to collaborate on text documents, useful for meeting notes, drafting sessions, education, team programming, and more.

Google Docs has it (and Google was FAR from first), and enough people use some part of the Google platform to make it quite easy to collaborate via their network, not some startup web site.

I'd rather not have people inserting ascii penises into my work.

I've already worked with real-time collaborative text editors going back to at least 2006. My first experience was using MoonEdit. This was precisely the reason I was not impressed by Google Doc's concurrent editing functionality. EtherPad is pretty much a JavaScript (client + server side) version of Gobby. Also take a look at Abiword's real-time collaborative editing functionality.
