A video from the Guardian
Members of the climate camp at Heathrow tour the sustainable features of the temporary community. Building the climate camp Video: Building the climate camp Environmentalist militancy attracted the attention of the world by immobilizing Heathtrow. What do they want? They simply want people to fly less and impose tighter emission standards for plane companies. Why do they want that? Because air transport is one of the most important sources of carbon emissions. What to expect as a result of this accrued militancy? - Political decision makers, starting with Europe, will gradually impose more stringent emission standards on landing and departing planes. - Taking into account "emission per flight per people" it appears that the emissions of one plane with 700 or more people are a lot lower than the total emissions of 3 planes with 200 people. And the conclusion will start to sink in that airport taxes have to go up in order to increase the competitiveness of larger planes in order to contain the emissions of air transportation. - the cost of air transportation is bound to increase drastically within the coming years making high speed trains a cheaper alternative. This means that short distance flights will be reduced and perhaps even disappear in the not so distant future. - European environmentalists are decidedly marking the political process with their footprints.
