PHIL BORGES (1942-Present) Humanitarian photographer Throughout 1994, Phil Borges traveled through Tibet as well as parts of Nepal and Northern India, where thousands of Tibetan refugees now reside. He began photographing and interviewing them in an effort to understand what had happened to their country and their culture. He found a deeply spiritual people struggling to survive and maintain compassion in the face of tremendous aggression. The invasion by the Chinese Communists in 1949 resulted in the death of 20% of the Tibetan population and the total destruction of all but a handful of their 6000 monasteries. The repression and aggression continues to this day. As the Tibetans work to save their unique culture and to regain their country, their internal struggle as human beings is to try to reconcile their non-violent principles with the rage that can arise when harmed. It is an extreme test of their commitment to compassion, to their religion, and to their culture. Borges has been a humanitarian photographer since the 1970s He found inspiration from Ron Zak who encouraged central themes through 'bodies of work'. This led to Phil Borges's signature style of black and white portraits with the subject's skin toned in. His largest influences were Irving Penn and Edward Curtis. Among several humanitarian efforts are: a project called Enduring Spirit for Amnesty International, which is to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the signing of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights; also The Gift, documenting dental, clift lip and burn marks surgery for underprivileged children done by volunteer American doctors; and perhaps most ambitious is BRIDGES to Understanding, "that connects children worldwide through digital storytelling". For over twenty five years Phil Borges has lived with and documented indigenous and tribal cultures around the world. Through his work, he strives to create a heightened understanding of the issues faced by people in the developing world. Through his exhibits and award-winning books, Phil attempts to create a relationship between the audience and his photographic subjects. "I want the viewer to see these people as individuals, to know their names and a bit of their history, not just to view them as an anonymous part of some remote ethnic or tribal group." Phil graduated from University of California as a Regents Scholar in 1969 and was honored with their prestigious University of California Medal in 2004. He lives with his family in Seattle. This spot is for my dear friend Donna from California, USA. In her own words, `My interests are infinite'. Among her many interest is photography.
