Counterfeit and fake products have been sold in many economies around the world since the beginning of manufacturing. Software is easily cracked and reproduced because the hackers have access to the same tools that the software creators do... (and have far more options due to relaxed moral/ethical beliefs) Not quite the same with Nanotech. It's not yet common enough to see a buddy of yours with a nano-factory in his basement. From what I can tell the goal of this nano-scale encryption is to use specially coded strings of molecules and atoms as a "watermark" to identify certain substances as being true and real.

"NanoInk's proprietary Nanoencryption technology process provides for full authentication and traceability of a product, at the unit level, throughout its supply chain." Counterfeit products are quite common in the pharmaceutical and cosmetic industries.
