The extent of Southern California's brush fires is evident on this high resolution satelite image.

Someone sent this to me with the ever so sweet message "Your state is on fire." Ass. ::spits out tabaccy:: Boy, I tell you what. I remember the Great Fire we had in Oakland back in...what was it...nineteen-hundred and ninety-one. ::leans back in rocking chair:: Now, that was a fire. Raged for days it did. Nary a house survived. ::strokes beard and starts rocking:: It damn near got my house. Saw that monstrous flame bearing down on us, over one of them...what do you call it...Free Ways. Reckon it would have gone on raging to this day if it weren't for those helio-choppers.... ::continues muttering incoherently::

California's brush fires, as seen from space "California's fires Southern Californians live uneasily between the allure of our natural surroundings -- and its dangers. When the air in Southern California takes on an unnerving yellow cast, it usually means disastrous wildfire. People miles away from the nearest blaze can still sense the oppressive eeriness of a crisis in the distance. The region is suffused with yellow air and crisis right now, so much that it's hard to know where we should direct most of our worry, sympathy and aid. Malibu at first, then San Diego. What about Lake Arrowhead? As common as fire is to autumn's parched scrub and arid gale winds, it never feels natural to the people who are chased from their houses at the intersection of civilization and wildlife, not knowing as they run whether they'll ever live in those familiar and dear spaces again."

These wildfires, like seen in the 911 photos from space, should hopefully remind us that this home we call Earth is an extension of us and what we do affects us all.

Sad, but not surprising. Sending thoughts and prayers to those affected and those who are helping.

I suppose this will teach them for living in the natural disaster center of the country.
