Good news. Finally acknowledgement that some business agreements are just garbage. There's more to take on than just this, like "if your restaurant only sells Coke, and not Pepsi, we'll charge you less per Coke." Or the AT&T iPhone lock-in. Consumers and the government have to stop putting up with this. If Microsoft wants to do a discount for a manufacturer buying a large number of licenses, that might be acceptable... but saying if Windows isn't shipped on *every* computer then they're going to charge more? That's wrong, and more of this completely artificial attempt at lock-in. Not the kind of deal people should be making. If this ends up driving up the price of Windows, great. Fewer people will use it and they'll realize other alternatives don't lock them into proprietary virus-prone spyware. If people really need Windows compatibility, look into http://reactos.org

@Benjay89: Congrats, you fail at thinking! The cost of the OS is already included in the price of the computer, these people were just rightfully getting their money back. Also, you may want to check your numbers on the percent of people who actually want Windows.

Are you kidding me? benjay89 OF COURSE you pay for the operating system when you buy the computer. You really thought Windows was offered with the computer? Last week a technician on a Portuguese computer store told me the same thing: "We don't charge for windows vista". He even told me they could format the computer, not give me the Vista and I wouldn't pay more for it! So I decided to check the price for the exact same computer on the store, but instead of getting original one, buying the pieces separately. Guess what? It's cheaper. So yes, if you don't use windows or already have a (legal) copy it is absurd to pay for it when buying a new computer.

If this becomes standard it just mean people who want to have windows preinstalled on their system (99.99% of PC buyers) are going to have to pay through the nose for it .

i dont think so benjay89. People are already paying for the operating system when they buy a computer. These people in the article just decided that they shouldn't have to pay for the operating system
