why you shouldn't bring your computer to geek squad for repairs, as told by a former employee
sdashiki rated 3 days ago
I dont care what anyone says. You bring a computer to ANY repair shop, they will look/find/copy/steal every photo and mp3 you have. There is no oversight for this kind of thing, you cant have someone over your shoulder all day. Seriously, its human nature. I cant stand GeekSquad employees defending BB and GS. You are a corporate shill, get off your high horse.

Have clients that have used geek squad, and most are computer idiots

..if you can't fix it yourself, you should probably just walk away from it.

..oh. ..would that put most of you out of a job? ..there was a time when you MADE your own tools so you could work. ..it made you a better worker and person. ..where have we gone wrong?

From the page: "Would you have someone come over to boil some water for you? Or have them vacuum your carpet and then pay them? Well it may seem silly but thatâ€s the equivalent of having Geek Squad install software for you." Uhh, you mean like a cook and a maid?!?! If you have the money and don't have the talent or time, then you pay someone to do it for you. I stopped building my own PCs because they're so friggin cheap now, and I don't have the time to screw with it anymore. There's a whole host of reasons not to go to geek squad, but this guys is a little off here.

What a load of biased crap. Refutation of every point:
1) All Geek Squad employees are required to have to have CompTIA A+ certification according to BB SOP. If they don't have it, by SOP they shouldn't even be considered for hire.
2) You're paying for a convenience, a "service." Anyone can do anything by themselves but some prefer to pay a premium to have someone else do it. By the way, any DIY hardware work voids most manufacturers warranty. So any work done to your computer has to be done by a certified technician, which Geek Squad Agents should be.
3) Yes the Geek Squad are sales persons. Everyone who works at Best Buy is a sales person. Do you know why? Because those sales contribute to the store's profit, and if the store hits budget, all the employees at the store get a bonus. How is this different from not being on commission? We don't have to hound every customer following them around like we're stalkers. We just offer product that "suits your needs." So sorry for doing our job that pays our bills.
4) Anecdotes. They are supposed to report any mistakes that occur in the report and refund the service.
5) The Geek Squad uses pictures on your machine for certain tests. If you think the Geek Squad Agent stole some of your pictures, report it. They'll be fired for not following regulations.

ORLY? I agree with all of your points, they're true. But this is pretty much exactly what Gawker Media's Consumerist site has been saying for years.
