  • Countdown: 10 Songs Led Zeppelin Stole From Other Artists : EAR FARM :: music information helps grow ears

At least Willie Dixon got paid during his life time for his songs. There is no doubt that Zeppelin was a great band. Sometimes when I want to hear those songs, I go back to the originals. I mean the stuff they took from say Sonny Boy Williamson, CAN NOT be done better by anyone, other then the... more

First of all, there aren't infinite blues and blues-rock song structures. Similarities are going to creep up from any blues band tracing back to the old delta bluesmen and beyond. If you are only going to listen to music which is truely original then you're going to struggle to find enough songs to fill a CD never mind a collection. What made Led Zep great was what they did with the songs. The songs may not have been original but what they did with them was. They were also amazing showmen and musicians. It's difficult to judge what Led Zep did by today's standards. Up until recently, songs/ and song ideas were passed down from one musician to another through covers and reworking old songs. A song's popularity wasn't judged by the number of downloads or youtube hits. If a song was good, other musicians would learn it, rework it, and pass it on. It was a sign of respect and how a song was kept alive. If you go back to the 60's then covers and reworking of songs was common place because the musicians belonged to a different generation and way of doing things. Building on the ideas and songs of musicians that came before is how music has developed for generations. When you listen to the songs that Led Zep supposedly ripped off, can you honestly say that Zep didn't bring something new or unique to the song? Would you have even heard of the original songs? Would it have been better if these songs had been lost forever? Would the world and music would have been better off if Zep hadn't made the songs that have influenced and brought pleasure to millions? Where Zep can be criticised isn't for what they did but by how they did it. Certainly, I think they might have gone about their writing credits differently. Even still, I'm not going to lie awake worrying about writing credits from 40 years ago. Led Zeppelin sound great and, for me, that's the bottom line. It's also worth remembering that the only reason that people have scrutinised Zep's songs so closely was because they were so popular. If they had only minor success, nobody would care. You'll excuse me if I don't throw out my Led Zep collection.

I have to say I'm really disappointed in Page. I thought he was so creative & such a talent. Doesn't take much to modify what someone already thought of.

originally it was a traditional English folk song that appears on Bert Jansch's 1966 album Jack Orion as "Blackwaterside" (LISTEN); yet it was credited on Led Zeppelin's first album as a Jimmy Page composition.

+1 for enjoiment's comment. All rock and roll of that era was heavily influenced by blues music, which happens to have, as mentioned, a few simple chords and, typically, a simple call and response lyrical form. In fact, I wish bands were still remaking these great songs of old but now they're just mass producing corporate-driven crap so I'd rather have a credit-greedy Zeppelin over some shit like Hoobastank anyday.
