I could really cut into this issue of the suburbs as a cultural criticism, but I won't. I'm not here to make value judgements about how you choose to live your life. The real meat of the problem is the fact that this way of building living regions is terribly inefficient and reliant on cheap gasoline as well as efficient transportation systems. As the level of population in the suburbs increases, and so long as the economic livelihood of the suburbs is dependent on the city, then efficient transport, sustainability of this way of life, and the extreme environmental toll of needless expansion will force a change or else risk serious devastation in the future. This film addresses these issues and more, in a compelling way. Check it out.
