Not hard to see why this works. One number minus the other will always be a multiple of nine and so the sum of the digits is 9, so the computer adds up the digits given and subtracts it from the next highest multiple of 9, giving it the missing digit.

I did it 4 times and the amazing young man got it right every time. I know it's some kind of mathematical numbers root kind of thingy but it was good brain fun and I needed this right now and so I will definitely send it to lots of people. :)
