How does a stall take out the engines? I don't think this is the whole story.

They could have restarted the engines if they built up enough speed in a dive. I read this in much more detail and they tried and failed to restart the engines three times before informing the controller. The thing is they didn't have enough airspeed to restart the engines because they basically didn't put the plane in a steep enough descent.
