All of this was true when I was in school. I didn't realize it, but I unconsciously believed that this stuff didn't matter any more. I guess I figured that since I don't consciously think about these thing on a day to day basis, that I don't use them on a day to day basis.... more

Yawn.A lot of this depends on your subfield in CS. I think it should probably be renamed to "Advice to Incoming Freshm[e]n in Programming." Which is odd, because the title suggests this is about general Comp Sci, then the first couple "tips" are good for programmers but more or less irrelevant for other concentrations in CS, and then the article itself admits (sic!) "Computer science != programming." It makes that point (which is true) while the rest of the "advice" plays into that very stereotype.Anywho... I'm CS with a concentration in security and networking technology, and most of the stuff on this list is not at all fitting for us networkers. But we're definitely still CS majors. Most of us can't write a lick of C, and we are flexible enough to (for instance) use a lot of different text editors as the situation demands.Sure, programmers probably want to learn one text editor (or even IDE) well. Meanwhile, people going into systems administration probably want to be competent in as many text editors as possible (never know what will be available on that old Unix box in the basement). "Tips" 6 and 7 are true of all sorts of fields in cyberspace as well as meatspace, and don't mean much as such.
