I ran a campaign in my home town back in 2002/3 to get people to sign up at a time when it was a case of getting 400 signatures from townspeople to get British Telecom to even think of switching the town on.
We sorted that out but up to recently I had an office that was about 800yards from the telephone exchange and could only ever get 6.5mbps of my advertised 'up to 8'. The main issue these days is contention ratio.
Recently Tiscali were one ISP complaining about the strain on them to deliver people tv content via broadband. Given they often put up to 1000 people down one line I am not surprised. A lot of people I know on Tiscali often end up with a modem speed connection at peak hours because of the high contention ratio.
Someone must invest in fibre-optic in the UK. It's the only way for the country to keep up with other countries. I am off to Tokyo to live at the end of October. I can get an average of 60mbps there and with the FibreToTheHouse [FTTH] package I can get up to 3giga-bps in our flat for a very reasonable price. Fibre is deep in the network there. They are streets ahead of everyone else. Again, like with the railways and roads in the UK, people have let the infrastructure go to the dogs over the years, have not invested in it and now people will say 'well, of course to put fibre in would be soooo expensive and sooooo disruptive'.
Why do we always let things get to this stage before doing something about it?
duxxyuk rated 14 months ago- Like Cristinaalp I agree this guy was a genius and way ahead of his time. He right up there with Tesla for his influence on society.
