I guess it's still got a long way to go, but it's looking very achievable!

I look forward to the fresh XP install. Predicted first words of Erin: "Why is everything so big?"

Very innovative review. After reading this article, I think it would be useful to put a new user before 3 computers, each running a clean install of Windows Vista, Ubuntu, and Mac OS X Leopard. It would be interesting to see how the user fares when accomplishing the same tasks across platforms.

I'm running Ubuntu and I love it but I can totally see exactly the point he is trying to make. My mom doesn't want to touch terminal yet I've had to break it out several times just to make flash work (I installed the 64 bit version). Ubuntu is making GREAT strides, but still isn't quite there just yet.

An experienced computer user sets his girlfriend, a philosophy major whose computer experience is limited to the usual internet-word processing-music-photoshop, down at a freshly booted Linux box and records her attempts at common tasks. It is interesting to view this 'review' of Linux by viewing a human attempting to use a machine that is made for a human. What functions are human (intuitive) and which are machine (logical)? As was shown, it was surprising how and where the human mind was boggled by the computer's language and syntax of operation. Where we would group concepts together based on common experience, the computer organizes concepts by fact, order by logistics. The Linux operating system is a metaphor for the environment of the computer mind, as the coders of the system live in the arcane knowledge and culture of the computer programmer. The closer we meld with the artificial intelligence, the more distinct both become.

Good read and sort of review for my favorite OS. IMHO, the girlfriend is used to Windows and was expecting Ubuntu/Linux to behave like it. A little askew in Windows' favor. Still, the observations are noteworthy and should be seriously considered by the folks at Canonical. These observations can only help to get people acquainted sooner to this powerful OS and to appreciate it as an all win-win alternative compared to others that may have their hold on users just because they are familiar.

Great experiment, and completely agree with the findings, as someone who has been (and still is to some extent) in "the girlfriend's" shoes.

Here's an exceptionally well thought out article about the attempts of a programmer's intelligent, but non-technical girlfriend (philosophy major in college) to work with Ubuntu linux for the first time. Tasks are given for her which are fairly straightforward for an experienced Mac or Windows user, and her attempts at solving them are carefully recorded. The bottom line is that Linux requires a leap in tech understanding over the typical Windows installation. Not that his girlfriend probably couldn't acclimate herself in a few days, but there would be some extreme aggravation along the way, and she would have to change her mode of thinking about what an operating system will do, and how to operate with one. For someone who has never tried a Linux system, this was fascinating.

+1 for the idea -- "I'd love to see a welcome screen for the first time you open up your desktop, with little videos explaining a few key concepts to how Linux and Ubuntu work. Maybe it could ask "What do you want to do?" and then explain how they could do this." "
