The real story here is that public entities could provide better alternatives for virtually any service under the control of an oligopoly. An ISP is a great example. A friend of mine is pushing for a government-run health insurance corporation, available to theoretically any citizen but not... more

High speed internet as a utility. Interesting article with lots of good discussion. IMHO, the point is that Time-Warner refused to provide a service, so the municipal government did. The real difference between the government utility and the corporation is the goal: one is there to provide a service, the other is there to make a profit.

I think every community should make a high speed fiber optic ISP for the local area as an infrastructure project that would take place nationwide, just to get on on par with some other parts of the world.

Ha! I love it. Who needs the government to try and mend the digital divide when the average citizen and their municipal government can fight the greed of major internet providers, and create a locally owned and controlled ISP. If we can only convince more towns to do this and then get politicians to write laws that would protect net neutrality, then everyone will be able to use the resources on the internet. I've used the internet to get a job, find who has lowest prices on food in the area, help find cheapest furniture, and find an affordable car. The internet should be a resource accessible to everyone.

And people claim that socialism doesn't work - HAH! And if you argue against public works like this then you might as well argue that we should disband any public water works, education, the military, etc (also you would be incredibly retarded).
