Lets Build a Compiler by Jack Crenshaw is probably the best when it comes to teaching compiler design to the absolute beginner, the way in which he writes is to explain everything he knows about compiler design in plain English, so this book is an excellent resource to those who don't have a strong mathematical background which is assumed by most of authors on the subject of compiler design and theory. Although a little dated, the technique in which he employs is the simplest out there - Recursive Descent, and is where a lot of people should start when building their first compiler. If you are looking for information and a practical approach to building a compiler, I recommend you start off with this. The author has chose Turbo Pascal to implement his compiler, so the code samples in the book can easily be translated in to the language of your choice.

It's available in two formats, plain text, and with printer control characters so it will print reasonably on an Epson printer.

I had long lost and forgotten this! (Actually, that's only partly true. I'm unusually verbose lately.)
