Wikipedia is useful to gather information that you are personally interested in. However, it can not be used as a valid source for material you produce for others. There is a need for a huge, free, available-for-all encyclopedia that can be used for that purpose. Perhaps this could fill that hole. I am completely for the free speech on Wikipedia, but why say no to an alternative with "gentle expert oversight"?

Plenty of room for alternatives to wikipedia, just another option to turn on/off. From the page: "The Citizendium (sit-ih-ZEN-dee-um), a "citizens' compendium of everything," is an experimental new wiki project. The project, started by a founder of Wikipedia, aims to improve on the Wikipedia model by adding "gentle expert oversight" and requiring contributors to use their real names. It has taken on a life of its own and will, perhaps, become the flagship of a new set of responsibly-managed free knowledge projects. "

Wikipenis-envy by Larry Sanger. Counterelitism and convenience built Wikipedia into an unstoppable, irreplaceable critical mass. No other copycat effort has a ghost of a chance. A few experts can never rise above the wisdom of crowds.

Not for all citizens.... Going toward "expert" control propagandizes away from reality. Read more critiques at: Racism and Sexism at Citizendium, Update on Racism and Sexism at Citizendium , More on Racism and Citizendium

Soon to come, an alternative to Wikipedia with better control over authorship and editing producing, hopefully, higher quality articles. The project will start with Wikipedia then branch off.

Wikipedia Forks... The Citizendium via Nova Spivek in Minding the Planet, in The Citizendium. The co-founder of the Wikipedia has decided to fork the project, creating a new alternative compendium called the Citizendium. The idea is that it will be comprised of community content that is moderated by "expert" editors. There seems to be some consternation about this among Wikipedians, while others think it may produce much more reliable content. URL: Wikipedia Forks... The Citizendium

Interesting development. We'll soon have the ability to see in parallel of Wikipedia's article's the version corrected by experts... Interesting times.
