Case in point: The library student in my Reference class (ca. 1995) who never read The Onion because she didn't get that it was satire. Didn't. Catch. That. Crucial. Point. She asked me why I was laughing out loud while reading a newspaper. Let's just hope she didn't go into a career in Reference.
