"Popular culture is by and large a swamp of noxious ephemera, the playthings of narrow and shallow minds trained more to distraction than to contemplation and abstract thought.""

bullethead rated 4 months ago- Cretinous pseudo-intellectual posturing to dress up snobbery. The "three minute rock song" has more power to move, and more genuine artistry, than 3 hours of soulless Phillip Glass wibbling, or some overblown Mahler symphony. Stephen King, if you take the time to actually try some of his work, is a writer of tremendous skill as well as imagination. Tarantino, though he embraces the shallow and revels in his love of B-movies and schlock, has done more for the creative life of Hollywood than any director I can think of in the last 20 years. It's easy to despise what you haven't taken time to understand isn't it?
lcfr rated 18 months ago- I misanthropic because of assholes like this. "Perhaps one day I will receive a check from some insightful institution that will allow me to do for misanthropy what Robert Burton did for melancholy: provide an encyclopedia for a philosophy that in its complexity rewards rigorous exegesis."As if he fucking created misanthropy. As if he is the source for this idea. What makes your philosophy better than mine or the homeless dude downtown?Ya know, if someone is gonna write this shit, they better do better than some masturbatory writing. Give a true goal. Make the article relatable so that other people give a damn.

- Mabye I'm just ignorant to subculture, but I don't know what the hell he's trying to say. If your going to overthrow the government or whatever it is you do, try to make sence at least.
jackhaze rated 32 months ago- Up with misanthropy! Down with melancholy!
Up with Down! Down with Up!
hannen rated 4 months ago- Funny - but true.
cleo1903 rated 16 months ago- Pretentious, egotistical, and has no point, but I kept reading for some reason...
A-minus rated 20 months ago- Interesting and entertaining, if highly cynical, little piece on misanthropy.
Not sure why everybody in the other reviews is so down on this. I didn't find it pretentious at all, but maybe that's just me.
techromance rated 20 months ago- Anyone that coins phrases such as 'cheery pancreas' needs to get their head out of their anus
anneliese rated 34 months ago- Pretentious twaddle.
