I'm always fascinated by self-destructive poets, and their poems. Probably because the poems I write are so different. Bukowski is refreshing in small doses.

I feel a need to qualify this. There is something about Bukowski's words that has always struck a resonant chord in me. He was a lost soul, but he was also a watcher and a commentator. He was both sensitive and profane. I guess he was simply human for better and worse, but he left a lot of gifts to posterity which is a lot more than many do.

I used to be a big fan of Bukowski, and I enjoyed looking around this web page. I found that as I got older, his self-destructive lifestyle became less romantic than I thought it was. His art was his life and his life was his art; one fed the other. But it was a very ugly life. All I can admire now is his self-discipline--he kept on writing no matter how hung over he was and no matter how desperate his life became. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend any of his fiction or poetry, but you might find that, as you get older, a little of it goes a long way.
