Giulietta discovered 36 months ago- [In Finnish:] Hesarin Unto Hämäläinen seuraa eilen aloittamassaan blogissa presidentinvaaleja. -- A Finnish political journalist has started a blog in which he follows campaigning in Finland's presidential election. At the moment the incumbent president Tarja Halonen - first woman in office - looks likely to win already on the first round, but will the situation change? The election's first round is due on January 15, 2006 (and the eventual second round two weeks later). The President assumes office on March 1, 2006. The incumbent president Halonen's (who is a social democrat) approval ratings have been extremely high during her entire term, and recent gallups have shown that she could well get over half the votes in the first round. Her major challengers, prime minister Matti Vanhanen and bank director Sauli Niinistö come from the political centre and right. Their supporters have strongly criticized Halonen's internationalist and humanist focus in foreign-policy. [About the election system: According to the Finnish Constitution the President of the Republic is elected by a direct vote, if necessary in two rounds (for a term of six years. If one of the candidates receives more than half of the (approved) votes cast in the election, he/she is elected President. If no candidate receives a majority, a new election is held between the two candidates who receive most votes in the first election. The one of them that gets more votes is elected President for a term of six years (the same person may be elected for no more than two consecutive terms).]
