But I am going to relay some lessons learned through hard experience on how to hire the best people you've ever worked with -- particularly for a startup. I'm going to cover two key areas in this post: Criteria: what to value when evaluating candidates. And process: how to actually run the hiring process, and if necessary the aftermath of making a mistake. Criteria first. Lots of people will tell you to hire for intelligence. Especially in this industry. You will read, hire the smartest people out there and your company's success is all but guaranteed. I think intelligence, per se, is highly overrated." Hiring the best - money is not the only motivator here!

This is the best damn article I've read in a long time. I wish more companies actually hired this way. You've inspired me to keep looking for a better job.

Hiring great people is one of the hardest thing an business owner needs too do, especially when starting out. Mark Andreessen does a great write up on it.

Hiring is one area that I need work on as an Entrepreneur (I've interviewed hundreds and personally hired 50+ people over my 4 startups, a few of them turned out to be not the best choice and a few real disasters). Here's a great post from Marc Andreessen about how to hire the best people you've ever worked with.
