An interesting and true phenomenon, but one that sadly is used as an excuse. I so often find people complaining about the loss of nuance in e-mails or IMs. As if they are in some way unique to all forms of written communication! People have been writing nuanced communications since writing was invented. My advice to those who consistently find themselves misunderstood because of the lack of body language and tone of voice in their e-mails and IMs: drop the emoticons and learn to write.

This person has stumbled upon an age old problem which is - what is the true meaning of this plain words sentence? Lawyers have given us (among others); The Golden rule, The Plain meaning rule & The Mischief rule. As well as; Ejusdem generis, Noscitur a sociis.

"HI guyz whats up

I was going to say: Valuable illustration of the limitations of the written word. But then it occurred to me, he's overcome the limitations by appropriate use of bold typeface. Which that wasn't.
