National ID Hit a Bump in the Road I was delighted to see that six state legislatures stood up against the federal government's new law that tries to force states to adopt a "your papers, please" national ID by requiring special new drivers'licenses, ostensibly to prevent identity theft, fraud and terrorism. Three cheers for Maine, Montana, New Hampshire, Oklahoma, South Carolina and Washington. These states, at least, recognize that the national ID's not only cost $11 billion but, more importantly, tred on our right to privacy. Homeland Security has wasted any time. It's already attacking the six states and trying to scare its residents and voters into pressuring their legislators to roll over and accept the ID cards, along with the loss of their privacy. Be scared folks, the terrorists are coming! Or so Homeland Security would like you to think. When a government demands you do what it wants or else, isn't that government tinkering with fascism? Isn't this a free country? Aren't we free to vote the way we like without being threatened by our own government? Where are we headed?
