Now this is an interesting site. It shows more than you might realize upon first glance. In this day and age, there is electricity where there are people. So you see those lights and know that there is a population large enough to produce enough light to be seen from space. Then another thing to ...

What was most interesting to me is that the "Dark Continent" is literally....dark. I would like to see this picture overlaid with a map of global income levels, I'm sure the correspondence would be very high.

I love these kinds of pics! Though it does show extensive light pollution, which is detrimental to the sanity of any astronomer, amateur or professional, you can also have fun tracing civilizations and such. Also, I've found it is fun to try and find your locale on this image. As MrsA says, you can easily see where the most populous areas are on the planet, and also where it would be difficult to live because of rugged mountains, or oceans ;) I do find it interesting, though, to see so many little dots littered around the oceans. Fun stuff!!!
