I have been trying to use Audible for nearly half a decade, and it never ceases to amaze me how much they love DRM. I'm astonished that they still haven't figured out how to deliver mp3 audio files like every other audio content provider on the entire Internet. I refuse to buy an Apple product and install Audible's giant idiot software or even-more-giant iTunes just to listen to an audio book. Authors should insist that publishers provide a legal way to buy mp3s of their books. I've never downloaded an audiobook using Limewire or Pirate Bay, but until there's a legal way to get mp3s, that's absolutely how people should be getting their audiobooks.

Audible.com is a comprehensive audiobook store that allows you to download audiobooks to your computer. The service is not free but the prices are very competitive and usually better than if you buy the CDs. Highly recommended.

I have been a member of audible for about 5 years now. Granted, it isn't reading a book. However, you can't read a book while driving, cleaning house, exercising, etc. I love it!!! Also, it is a lot less expensive than buying audio cds/tapes.

The audio is great, and if you're a member it is relatively cheap as compared to CDs or even audio rentals. This is one of the few sites whose design really irks me, though. It's hard to do simple things because of the busy-ness of the homepage.

I've been a member of this site for years -- subscribed to This American Life before the free podcast. Check it out -- audiobooks for download.
