The best free software around when it comes to recording and editing audio files. There are a ton of plug-ins too, making Audacity a potentially better alternative to Sound Forge.

Highlights of Audacity are recording from your microphone, recording any sounds coming through your sound card and touching up Mp3s (though to save them in this format requires the LAME plug-in ).

It has a certain tacky presentation that could off put some new users at a distance.

Used it to send messages back to my family in Portugal (I'm currently working abroad in France), and loved it! :)
