- Debt sucks. I acquired my very first debt (student loan) ever 9 months ago and have felt like I was having a heart attack ever since. It is a horrible feeling, like selling my soul- or signing away my freedom. People are constantly telling me that you need debt to build credit- what? to accumulate more debt?- life can be lived debt free. The only relatively smart loan you can take out is a mortgage and look where that's gotten many people. You can get lucky with a business or education loan, but they're a gamble like any investment. (My debt has occured alongside depression, weight gain and a previously unknown spending compulsion- there would be no shock in learning they are connected.)
