really oldie, but goodie Are square A and B the same color? They are. Are too. To verify this, click on the above image to see them connected. The above illusion, called the same color illusion, illustrates that purely human observations in science may be ambiguous or inaccurate. Even such a seemingly direct perception as relative color. Similar illusions exist on the sky, such as the size of the Moon near the horizon, or the apparent shapes of astronomical objects. The advent of automated, reproducible, measuring devices such as CCDs have made science in general and astronomy in particular less prone to, but not free of, human-biased illusions.

The Same Color Illusion in Nasa's Astronomy Picture of the Day

The Same Color Illusion http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w8Zz05t19dg "... purely human observations in science may be ambiguous or inaccurate. ... The advent of automated, reproducible, measuring devices such as CCDs have made science in general and astronomy in particular less prone to, but not free of, human-biased illusions." In summary what our eyes see is not necessarily what reality is all about. This was the foundational question of "high" modernity. Understanding that the first degree image given by our visual sensors was no more than an illusion of reality Van Gogh, Picasso, Miro, Kandinsky, Masson, Breton, Duchamp and all the others struggled to find a way of representing reality that was more "true" than this mirage that our eyes let us see... A century later force is to admit that they did not succeed to give us visual signs that better reflect reality than the first degree image projected by our eyes in our minds. I just happen to think that the time was not ripe in the 20th century but ... the conditions at the dawn of the 21st century appear more promising and will eventually help artists in creating visual signs that illustrate reality far better than first degree realism or any school of high modernity .
