Tug is fun! Just do it! (see below) New version after reading whoneedsit's review: Yes, do it, but with rules. Tug can be a great way to teach a dog to be calm, but without rules, you'll have a rowdy, out of control tugger!

Grisha's instructions are solid, but have to be followed to the letter, if appropriate "tug" is to be learned. The reason tug is often discouraged in the everyday world, is that to play it, without strongly reinforced rules, is to teach the dog that tugging, pulling, grabbing...using the mouth...is good. Dog is , inadvertently, encouraged to do it at inappropriate times, with inappropriate items (pants legs, waving arms, etc.). It's not that it makes dogs aggressive. It's that, without rules, it can result in dogs becoming dangerous by their failure to understand what's good rough play, and what's not. Many a pup has been abandoned to the shelter, for failure to understand the difference between all that rough, mouth-using play, and hurting someone. So please, don't "just do it" unless you are prepared to teach and follow the rules. They're right here, in this article!
